Acetates of pencil rubbings, magnets
8.5" X 11" X 4"
This project was a response to my family's repeated experiences of loss of loved ones from 2010-2011. It was my attempt at making tangible evidence of our connectedness despite our geographical proximity.
Line rubbings of graphite on paper have been layered as photocopied acetates to make this series of sculptures. Each page contains one graphite rubbing of a personal object belonging to each member of my immediate family. For my family to participate a sketchbook traveled from Montreal to Vancouver, then to Hawaii and back to Vancouver, and finally returned to Montreal. We each completed 30 pencil rubbings of objects that are of interest to us and/or relevant in our daily lives. When layered as acetates they create dynamic family portraits, interlacing each of our stories in ways which allows them to interact with and inform each other.
