Here are some pics of my piece, Leaves Are Falling II, in the current FBRS 480 year-end show. We are having a photographer come in this week to shoot the entire show, so keep going back to the show website to see those added soon (www.byhookorbycrook.ca). Tomorrow my class' year-end show opens!!! By Hook or By Crook is an amalgamation of artworks by 16 artists who all work with fibre. Some fun facts about the show: there are 5 works with sound components, including mine, 3 immersive installations and two experiential/participatory pieces. I think it's obvious when you see the show that our class has worked super hard on making the show happen, and that every artist put their heart and soul into their pieces.
So, it opens tomorrow at Eastern Bloc @8pm (metro De Castelneau), here's the website with all the info (courtesy of moi), and some killer photos of our artwork, taken by Riley Sparks. byhookorbycrook.weebly.com By Hook or By Crook is a part of En avril, the Montreal Fibre Art festival. It's a month of fibre shows across the island. The opening reception happens to be taking place tomorrow as well, just before our vernissage, so our class will all be there and we're providing a bus to transport everyone from Concordia's downtown campus to our show. I can't wait! hrmmm, I'm trying to think of a photo to add to this post, but can only think of this one, which I've already posted, and the one below which gives you a little insight as to how the final project has evolved. Come see it tomorrow :) -janna It's been a busy week....as you can see by my outfit both these shows had happenings on the same day. WEIGHS came down today, and after a few days of install at Galerie Diagonale Don't Call it a Comeback is opening tomorrow. The vernissage is @ 2pm, I'd love to see some familiar faces there. Might it help that there will be a performance at 3:30 and gin and tonic served?
Also yesterday we mapped out the layout for By Hook or By Crook at Eastern Bloc, opening on the 30th. It's going to be a great show.
Come to the Interfold launch party, featuring this piece of mine in the mag and this piece at the launch party.
Interfold Magazine is a " fine arts publication at Concordia University that acts as an exhibition within a magazine curated around a theme". Their premiere theme is 'confines'. I haven't see it yet, but the front cover looks promising :) There will be beer, mixed drinks and grilled cheese! Yum. January 14th @ 9pm 1175 Rue St. Marc, Montréal www.interfoldmagazine.com ![]() Tomorrow I will have an outside installation as part of journees des bons voisins on St. Viateur West. Artists and other participants each occupy a parking space between Jeanne-Mance and St. Urbain. Mine will have a participatory installation in it, kind of like Traces, with a twist. Come visit between 11 and 8. Here is the text from their website to give you an idea of what it's all about: Following the highly successful 2010 edition, ruePublique, formerly Car Free Mile-End, will once again organize les Journées des bons voisins on St Viateur West. The third and final event of the summer will take place Sunday, September 18th, from 11 am to 8 pm. The main objective is to celebrate the best aspects of enhanced public space, as well as to promote Mile-End’s strengths: sense of community, creativity and conviviality. The programming will include bike repair workshops, music, yoga in the street, kiosks animated by community groups, youth and physical activities organized by the YMCA, public art, as well as participation by local merchants. I went to the gallery today to take some shots of my piece in the show. I really need to get myself a better camera so I don't have to continue to borrow the ones from the school (which don't come with manuals). Or I could learn how to use Photoshop since most of my trouble was with colour balance and light. Anyways, here they are with most of the rest of the show in the bunch as well.
The show is up until the 26th... Galerie Diagonale 5455 Rue de Gaspe Montreal, QU Last night was a total success! TRACES got filled up. The location I was in helped a lot as it was right at the entrance of the 3rd floor. With my simple written directions (thanks Jenna Dawn for the french translation) people were happy to participate. I even took some panels down later in the evening to replace with clean paper for more space. Tomorrow I go back down to the space to pick up the materials so I can make something sculptural for the organizers Harvey and Judith to have as a keepsake. Not sure what I'm going to do yet, maybe baskets to match the ones in the installation...
Here are some not-so-successful photos of the installation in process...(a bit fuzzy) I installed TRACES yesterday at Corridor Culturel, a Nuit Blanche venue where there will be a lot of fun things this Saturday night (including my installation): stop-motion video performances, a symphony orchestra, live music, many art installations and much more that I'm not even aware of. What I do know is that Danny is playing a one hour set at 1am in the loft, and my Fibres Structures class is coordinating an experiential weaving installation in the outside barn and on the second floor of the main building. TRACES is participatory as well; come leave some traces of your own. You can find me on the third floor where I'm inviting passers by to leave traces on the paper-covered walls by doing pencil rubbings of objects that they have on hand; coins, rings, key chains, anything textured really. Judith Bauer, one of the organizers told me that last year they didn't have much documentation of the night, so I'll be using the marked paper to create a woven structure for them to keep as a means of remembrance. My pieces in the show are a series of four pencil line rubbings accompanied by none other than the objects which once laid beneath the paper and helped guide my hand while drawing. So, my objects played a part in the making of the artworks quite literally. It should be interesting to see how the other artist's objects relate to their paintings and drawings. I imagine many will have much more of a symbolic relationship with each other. I'll post pictures near the end of the week.
DISPLACED: Art & Objects CTRLLAB, 3634 St.Laurent Montreal Opens January 12, 2010 January 12th: 12 to 5 January 13th:12 to 8 Friday January 14th: Opening starts at 6 and Gallery is open from 12 to 12 January 15th: 12 to 5 So my piece got into GRIS at Diagonale! YAY! Bellow is a link to the other pieces by the other 100+ people that are participating. Above is a submission by Ute Wolff, one of my personal faves so far. Even though I was running around like a crazy lady getting ready for the Hung Up installation I managed to make something for the upcoming fibre art show/fundraiser for the artist run gallery Diagonale. The theme is Gris (or Grey en anglais). I called mine Line, it was made using the beginning of (and later cut off part) of the painted warp sky weaving I did for Hung Up. I then sewed over it with grey thread and bunched it together in a way that met the size standards. Since it's a wall hanging I stiffened it slightly by spritzing it with medium.
Now for a response from the gallery. fingers crossed. Here's a link to a blog I follow by Alexis Boyle who also applied for Gris. I love her submissions. Here's the time lapse video I did of me installing my pieces in the VAV Gallery last week, it's about five hours of filming crammed into just under a minute. Believe me the installation took a lot longer than five hours, but I got sick of waiting for the battery to recharge every 45 minutes. I'm on my way down there today to book an SLR camera to take some good photos.
