_Line rubbings of lead on paper have been layered as photocopied acetates to make
this series of sculptures. The unique thing about these rubbings is that they
were a collaborative effort by myself and my immediate family. Every page has
one line by each member (myself, my parents and two brothers). When layered as
acetates they create dynamic family portraits, interlacing each of our stories
in ways which allows them to interact with and inform each other; augmenting and
enriching the meaning of each others' stories.
For my family to participate a sketchbook traveled from Montreal to Vancouver, then Hawaii and back to Vancouver, and finally returned Montreal. We each completed 30 pencil rubbings of objects that are of interest to us and/or relevant in our daily lives. Some objects included were: rosary, moose-mate call cassette, blues chromatic harmonica, broken sunglasses and yarn. This project was a response to my family's repeated experiences of loss of loved ones from 2010-2011. It was my attempt at creating documentation of the relationship dynamics within my family while celebrating and making tangible evidence of our togetherness despite our geographical proximity. |
